INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP: PUBLIC WORKS TOWARDS THE 21ST CENTURY
The Department of Public Works is presenting an international workshop: "Public Works towards the 21st Century" in Johannesburg on 30 and 31 July 1996.
The workshop is aimed at repositioning the transformed Department of Public Works within the South African Government to fulfil its due role as facilitator of development and growth, not only in this country, but in the rest of the continent.
To do this, a discussion document on the operations and policies as presented by the Department will be debated for the two days. Debates will centre around aspects such as the information technology and systems required; the human resource development intentions and implications; economic and environmental aspects and regulatory frameworks as it pertains to the property investment analysis, property management and property development functions of the Department. These functions will be restructured to operate on project management principles - this approach internationally indicating the greatest possibility of socio-economic contribution to the overall reconstruction and development in Government and in South Africa.
Shortly after this workshop, the Department intends to launch its Green Paper. All media will be informed prior to the launch.
Various targets in this process need to be met before the intended launch of the new, transformed Department of Public Works on 1 April 1997. As in the past, we intend taking the media along as partners in informing our public.
