Following on the announcement that citizens of Southern African Development Community (SADC) member States presently residing in South Africa, and who qualify in terms of certain conditions, could apply for exemption in terms of which permanent residence in the RSA may be legally acquired, the Department of Home Affairs has received 1 459 applications for such exemptions in the first two weeks of July.
Most of the applications received were from citizens of Mozambique and Zimbabwe and the majority of applications, 1155, were lodged at offices in Gauteng.
Statistics of applications received per province and indicating the country of origin of applicants. Will be issued by the Department fortnightly.
Applications for exemptions can still be made at any office of the Department of Home Affairs until 30 September 1996.
