Issued by: The Ministry of Education
The Minister of Education, Prof Bengu will convene a National Summit of Higher Education stakeholders on the 29th to 30th July 1996 at the Indaba Karos Hotel at Fourways in Johannesburg.
The Minister has invited university and technikon principals, student representative councils, student organisations, staff associations, governing councils and representatives of business, and organised labour to be part of the summit. A Preparatory Committee, headed by Prof Mosala, with student, management, staff and government representatives will finalise the agenda and all other arrangements for the summit. The preparatory committee will hold a press conference at 10h00 on Friday, 26 July, 1996 to brief the public on the progress made in preparation for this important meeting.
This summit will be a culmination of an elaborate preparatory work that took the form of bilateral and multilateral discussions, with a variety of higher education stakeholders, in which the department put across its proposals on the path to be followed in transforming the Higher Education sector. The Minister will table a draft National Framework Agreement on the Transformation of Higher Education, for discussion at the summit. This will deal with the context, content, time-frames, participants, and structures for transformation of the higher education sector.
The department believes that there is enough goodwill to build maximum consensus on a national framework for negotiated transformation. We urge the higher education community to fully commit itself to an accelerated transformation process, inclusive of all stakeholders.
