MEC STATEMENT ON THE BOMB EXPLOSIONS ON ATM MACHINES IN ALBERTON AND MALVERN
The criminals who bombed the Standard Bank and Bank of Lisbon ATM machines in Alberton and Malvern, must be hunted down and brought to book as a matter of urgency.
Explosive devices were detonated in the ATM machines of these banks yesterday at about 11:30 p.m. at the Standard Bank in Alberton and at 02:10 a.m. this morning at the Bank of Lisbon in Malvern, causing serious damages to the machines.
The robbers were however not able to get away with the money and no one was injured during the explosions.
Similar commercial explosive devices are reported to have been used and police are investigating the possibility of connection between the two incidents.
A beige Ford Sierra was reported to have been around the spot in Malvern and the police have intensified their investigations. The community is called upon to help the police with information that can lead to the speedy arrest of the perpetrators.
The MEC for Public Safety and Security, Gauteng Province, Ms, Jessie Duarte, also calls on all the Banks to intensify their security for 24 hours around the banks and work closely with the police in the direction of ensuring that such acts do not occur.
"The community should remain calm but be alert at all times when going to use ATM machines," The MEC said.
