Issued by: Minister of Transport

MEDIA STATEMENT BY MR MAC MAHARAJ, MINISTER OF TRANSPORT

19 JULY 1996

On Sunday, 14 July 1996, the first minibus-taxi training pilot project was launched jointly by the National and KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport as one of the first of a series of initiatives in implementing the interim recommendations of the NTTT. My nine provincial counterparts and I identified the following four main areas for immediate attention inn the process of solving the problems in the minibus-taxi industry, namely:

The purpose of the project was to address specific training needs in the minibus-taxi industry and to assist the provincial Departments of Transport in embarking on their provincial training initiatives.

Fifty-eight delegates from the taxi industry, including taxi drivers, operators and association officials, as well as officials from the nine provinces, attended the week long course.

During this week, the following courses, accredited by the Department of Labour, were presented:

Similar courses will be initiated in due course in the other provinces.

I have been informed that the course was very successful, which indicates the positive response and commitment of the industry and government in the endeavour to transform the taxi industry into a safe, organised and viable industry.

Certificates will be presented to the participants at a function to be held tonight at 18:00 at the Jewish Club, 44 Old Fort Road, Durban.
