@ HOME AFFAIRS REGRETS INCONVENIENCE CAUSED TO MR JONES

Issued by: Ministry of Home Affairs

MEDIA RELEASE BY THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS, MS L N SISULU

18 July 1996

I have noted the problems experienced by Mr Roy Jones, a British citizen, on entering the RSA on 14 July 1996. Indeed, this matter was brought to my attention during the morning of 14 July 1996. The necessary steps were taken by myself to facilitate admission into the country.

I have since investigated the matter and have found that Mr Jones was on the stop list as from 1984 and that when the list was revised, his name was unfortunately not removed. My findings are further that this was a rather unfortunate incident and for this reason I have communicated my sincere regrets to Mr Jones for the inconvenience caused.

I have requested the Department of Home Affairs to provide me with a complete list of all the persons affected by this stop list, together with the attendant reasons for their being on the list.

I intend studying this to ensure that it is in line with the policies of the present Government so that a similar embarrassment does not occur in future.
