MEDIA RELEASE
17 JULY 1996
The Commission of Inquiry into Taxation in South Africa, chaired by Professor Michael Katz, has established a number of sub-committees in the continuing process of investigating South Africa's taxation system.
Sub-committees have been appointed to deal with the following issues:
The taxation of non-governmental organisations is currently under investigation; and
The Commission is in the process of addressing various issues towards an holistic review of the tax system and it is expected that calls for submissions on various issues will be made later this year. In view of the size of this task it is expected to be finalised in October 1997.
Each of the sub-committees has called for submissions from persons outside of the Commission on the topics it is addressing. Public hearings will be held by the Commission at a later date.
The Commission has agreed that this year, instead of issuing a fourth interim report at the end of November, as was customary in the past, it is aiming to complete its recommendations at the end of October.
