MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE SITUATION IN WESTBURY
The Ministry of Safety and Security, Gauteng, call on all people of Westbury and the surrounding areas to co-operate with police in bringing calm and safety in the area.
More than 300 policemen, members of the traffic department members of public order policing, helicopters and members of the SANDF will be sent to the area this weekend, to ensure that the funerals take place peacefully and stability is brought back in the area.
The funeral of Mr. Sam Jacobs, alias Cabios, who was shot and killed during an alleged attempted hijacking on Saturday 06/07/96 in Newclare, will take place tomorrow, 13/07/96.
Subsequently, there has been retaliatory gang-related violence which has resulted in the shooting and killing of Dolphie van Dyk, Ralph Lambert ad Darius Lawrence, all of whom will be buried tomorrow as well.
The police in Westbury have thus far arrested one suspect and more arrests are expected soon. Investigations are continuing.
Community co-operation with the Station Commissioner and the police during the investigations thus far is indeed commendable.
The Ministry urges the Community Policing Forum, the youth, women, and all sectors of the community to unite and ensure that this co-operation is enhanced; all the perpetrators of gang violence are brought to book and calm is brought back in the area.
