PRESS STATEMENT

CABINET MEETING - 3 JULY 1996

The Cabinet held a meeting in the Union Buildings, Pretoria, this morning, in the main considering legislation to be submitted to the Parliament when it reconvenes after the winter recess.

A number of Bills were approved by the Cabinet. These are listed in the attached Annexure.

The Cabinet received a progress report on the establishment of an Office on the Status of Women that would be located in the Presidency.

The Cabinet approved the establishment of an Advisory Committee to investigate, and advise the Cabinet on the formation of a National Development Agency. The Advisory Committee is to be chaired by the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.

The Cabinet also approved the appointment of a Commission of inquiry to investigate and determine the events leading up to, and the impact on the surrounding communities and the environment of, the fire at the Somerset West site of AECI Limited in December 1995. The Commission will be chaired by a judge of the Supreme Court.
