RELEASE: REGARDING THE SALARIES OF MAGISTRATES

A media release regarding the salaries of magistrates was issued on Saturday, 29 June 1996 in which the revised salary structure for magistrates was announced. From the reports in the media it is clear that most newspapers carrying this story quoted the old salary structures instead of the new revised scales. It is therefore necessary to again bring the new revised salary structures under everyone's attention:

• In the first place the salaries of magistrates will be increased from 1 July 1996 with an minimum of 20% across the board.
• In the second place the new revised salary structure encompasses only six grades varying from R65 520,00 to R221 141,00 per annum. The breakdown of these grades are as follows: Salary level 1 - R 65 520,00 p.a. Salary level 2 - R102 375,00 p.a. Salary level 3 - R136 200,00 p.a. Salary level 4 - R161 644,00 p.a. Salary level 5 - R171 173,00 p.a. Salary level 6 - R221 141,00 p.a.
• The former salary structures ranged from R40 868,00 p.a. R131 476,00 p.a., within 32 different gradings.
