PARLIAMENT DECLINING M-NET DECODERS

Issued by: Parliament of the Republic of South Africa

PARLIAMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Presiding Officers have written to M-NET declining the offer made to them to provide decoders and satellite equipment made to members of Parliament. In their letter the Presiding Officers said.

"We wish to express our appreciation for the offer you have made to provide decoders and satellite equipment to members of Parliament. As previously indicated, the political parties accepted the offer in principle, but on condition that Parliament managed the process.

We regret to inform you that we have not been able to identify a way for Parliament to manage the process in a manner that would address the practical and ethical concerns that have been raised. We are therefore unable to accept the offer on behalf of Parliament.

You may wish to take the matter further with political parties."
