Issued by: Ministry of Health

The Minister of Health, Dr N C Zuma, will deliver the opening address at the Trauma Congress to be held at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza, Durban on Wednesday 19 June 1996 at 19:00.

Amongst the 250 guests expected to attend, are delegates from Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and the United States. The MEC for Health and Social Welfare in KwaZulu/Natal, Dr Z Mkhize, will lead a high-powered Provincial delegation to the Trauma Congress. The Heads of Medical Schools in Surgery from different institutions throughout the country will also attend. This will be the 2nd Trauma Congress to be held in South Africa, the first having been held in 1993.

The four-day Congress will not be exclusive to doctors, but will involve health workers and others dealing with trauma, inter alia nurses, paramedics, the army, navy, Sea Rescue workers etc. There will also be a Trade Exhibition by local companies which produce equipment for trauma management.

This Congress could not have come at a better time, particularly with the on-going violence in KwaZulu/Natal. It will provide an avenue for the delegates to share experiences on the effects and management of trauma, resulting from political violence, domestic violence and accidents, to communities, the economy and the health budget.
