NEW BOARD FOR MMF INTERVIEWS FOR NEW MEMBERS GOING AHEAD

Friday, June 14, 1996

It is with great pleasure that the Minister of Transport, Mac Maharaj, today announces that interviews for the new Board of the Multilateral Motor Vehicle Insurance are to go ahead on 26th June 1996.

Following on the Department's public call for nominations in the Government Gazette and in the press towards the end of last month, a wide range of interest groups and individuals have come forward with nominations for members to serve on this important body, whose members will be selected for their proven professional expertise in a range of fields crucial to the effective operation of a public vehicle accident compensation fund.

In order to ensure as open and transparent a process as possible, the Minister has established a committee comprised of the Director-General of Transport, the Chairpersons of the National Assembly and Senate Standing Committees on Transport and two senior and respected members of the insurance and legal fraternities to conduct the interviews with the thirty or so short-listed candidates, and to report back to him with recommendations. The interviews will be held in public at the Offices of the Department of Transport, Forum House, Struben Street, Pretoria, from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm on 26th June, and all interested parties are welcome to attend.

The new Board will take office upon the expiry of the term of the current Board on 16 July 1996. The Department is currently piloting legislation through Parliament which entrenches its responsibility to maintain a widely-skilled and highly competent Board at the helm of the Fund, and to ensure that the quality of its members is periodically renewed through the careful selection process outlined above.

The Minister also takes this opportunity to remind the public at large of the recent release of the Department's White Paper on the restructuring of the MMF. Copies of this can freely be obtained from the Department in Pretoria (012)-290 9111, or from the Parliamentary Office in Cape Town (021-45 1045).
