TSHWETE STATEMENT ON CONVENTION FOR SPORT

Issued by: SA Communication Service

In his budget speech to Parliament earlier this year, Mr S V Tshwete, Minister of Sport and Recreation announced that the first ever sport and recreation facilities convention to be held in South Africa was soon to be launched. Mr Tshwete, will open this convention in Johannesburg on 14 June 1996. This convention can be regarded as another important milestone in the history of South African sport. All the major stakeholders in the field of facilities have been invited

Representatives from national and provincial government, construction experts, local authorities, sports bodies at national, provincial and club level will all be participating. Amongst the sports bodies present will be cricket, rugby and soccer.

An expert on sports facilities from the United Kingdom, Dr Ivor Davies, will be amongst the keynote speakers who will address aspects ranging from type, location, size and maintenance of facilities.

It is anticipated that the outcome of the convention will lead to the formulation of a national blue print for the provision of sport and recreation facilities for South Africa.

The convention is intended to contribute directly to the reconstruction and development programme and will ensure that capacity building features prominently in the plan.
