MEDIA STATEMENT ON OPERATION ROOIKAT

The Gauteng Ministry of Public Safety and Security would like to congratulate the Area Commissioner for Johannesburg and the South African Police Services for the successful results that they have achieved with Operation Rooikat thus far. The Ministry would like to assure the police that we are fully behind them in their efforts to prevent crime which is haunting our province.

The Ministry urges all the police officers involved in this operation to pursue their duties with respect for human rights and dignity as required by the Constitution and the Police Act.

The Ministry's appeal for people to carry their Ids; the proof of purchase for hawkers selling goods on the street pavements; as well as Visas for foreign visitors, is designed to ensure that police carry their duties effectively with regard to possible violators of traffic regulations, those in possession of illegal fire arms and illegal immigrants.

We would like to appeal to all the citizens of Gauteng who are resident in Johannesburg and within surrounding areas to co-operate with the police when exercising their duties during this operation. The challenge is upon all the people of Gauteng to declare once and for all that we shall never tolerate crime in our province any longer.

The Ministry would be monitoring the operation very closely, to ensure that the operation is not only carried out within the confines of the law, but that the rights and freedoms of the individual are upheld at all times.

The MEC for Safety and Security, Ms Jessie Duarte and other members of the Ministry will visit regularly the various areas where there are roadblocks as well as those areas where there is intensive police visibility during the operation.

If there are any problems faced by members of the public during the operation, the contact persons and numbers of the Ministry are:
