Women are grossly underrepresented in our new local government. No more than 19,04% of all councilors in last year's local government elections are women. As South Africa launches its new democracy efforts must be made to ensure the active participation of women in its ranks.
This is the focus of the IDASA-LOGIC's conference on Women in Local Government: Breaking Barriers, which will be held at the Holiday Inn Garden Court, Johannesburg on the 17-18 June 1996. The conference will highlight the current status of women in local government and identify mechanisms to overcome barriers to the participation and representation of women in these structures.
The conference will be attended by over 200 delegates and includes on its panel of presenters, Minister Valli Moosa; Parliamentarians Pregs Govender, Fatima Chohan and Nozizwe Routledge; Councilors Nomaindia Mfeketo and Alice Coetzee, and NGO representatives Nora Fakude-Nkuna and Cathi Albertyn. The conference will be opened by the Mayor of Johannesburg (Southern MSS), Sophie Masite and IDASA Programme Director, Paul Graham. It will close with a press conference on Tuesday the 18th June 1996 at 14h45. The conference will be addressed jointly by IDASA and the Minister of Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development, wherein the outcomes and action plans to ensure a more equitable representation of women in local government will be presented.
