MOLEFE STATEMENT ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Issued by: North West Communication Service

STATEMENT BY NORTH WEST PREMIER POPO MOLEFE ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - 5 JUNE 1996;

It is indeed heartening that World Environment Day is celebrated by millions and millions of more people each year. From time immemorial, the earth has been a sanctuary not only for humanity, but also for other living beings.

It is now more important than ever before that we protect the earth and its environs in order that our children and our children's children benefit from our caring policies.

World Environment Day is inextricably linked to our desire for a better for all the people of South Africa.

For without caring policies towards the environment, the future would be as bleak as a day without sunlight.

In this vein, we in the North West Provincial Government are strongly committed to a strong eco-tourism policy - a major plank in our attempts to ensure our tourist industry in the North West tallies with environment-friendly use of our natural resources.

Thus, the upgrading, for instance, of the Pilanesberg Airport, is part of our eco-tourist drive whereby vast numbers of tourists can visit the North West province without impinging on nature.

We salute all who have participated in World Environment Day.
