MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT MINISTER MAC MAHARAJ PART OF SA DELEGATION TO PEACE MISSION ON NORTHERN IRELAND

The Minister of Transport, Mr Mac Maharaj, leaves this weekend on a visit to Ireland. He is part of the three-person South African delegation to this event and he will be representing the ANC. The other members of the delegation are Mr Leon Wessels, deputy chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly, who will be representing the National Party, and general Constand Viljoen, leader of the Freedom Front Party.

The delegation will spend a week in Dublin and Belfast, where meetings will be held with, amongst others, President Mary Robinson; Mr Bertie Ahern (leader of the largest opposition party); Ms Mary Harney (Opposition); Mr John Hume (Social Democratic and Labour Party); Mr David Trimble (Ulster Unionist Party); Rev Dr Ian Paisley (Democratic Unionist Party); David Ervine (Progressive Unionist Party of Northern Ireland); Robert McCartney (UK Unionist Party); Dr John Alderdice (Alliance Party of Northern Ireland); Mr Gerry Adams (Sinn Fein); Mr Garry McMichael (Ulster Democratic Unionist party).

Meetings will also be held with various government ministers, including Ms Nora Owen, (Justice); Mr Brendan Howlin (Environment); Mr Proinisa de Rossa (Social Welfare).

The Peace Mission will be concluded with a press conference at the Glencree Reconciliation Centre in Dublin next Thursday, 6 June 1996.
