Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

31 MAY 1996

MEC STATEMENT ON MURDER AND INJURY OF THE RENSBURG FAMILY.

The Gauteng MEC for Public Safety and Security, Ms Jessie Duarte would like to express her deepest condolences and sympathy with the Van Rensburg family following the tragic death of Mr Piet and Pietman van Rensburg. The MEC would also like to wish the Springbok trialist and Transvaal reserve flyhalf Louis Van Rensburg, a speedy recovery.

The quick police reaction in arresting the four suspects in Alexandra by the police is indeed commendable. The Ministry urges the police to leave no stone unturned and act decisively to ensure that the two remaining suspects are arrested and brought to book as soon as possible.

It is now time for the police to send a clear message to all the criminals that there is no place for them in our communities and the time for tolerating crime, especially of a callous nature like the murder and injury of the Van Rensburg family will come to an end.

The Ministry fully supports the police in their endeavours to curb robberies and crime in our province. The time has come for the community to join hands with the police in their search for the remaining culprits. The challenge has come for all the people of Gauteng to help the police at all times in their efforts to bring to an end crime and the brutal murder and robbery of innocent people.
