MEDIA RELEASE BY THE MINISTER OF SAFETY AND SECURITY, MR SYDNEY MUFAMADI, PRETORIA, 23 MAY 1996
SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT FRANK DUTTON TO WORK WITH MR JUSTICE GOLDSTONE IN THE HAGUE
At the request of Mr Justice Richard Goldstone, Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the National Commissioner has agreed to second Frank Dutton to the United National Investigating Team in the Hague.
Senior Superintendent Frank Dutton presently heads the Investigation Task Unit in KwaZulu/Natal which was established to investigate allegations of hit-squad activities by members of security forces in that province.
Judge Goldstone's request was discussed with the Attorney-General of KwaZulu/Natal, Mr Tim McNally who has agreed that Dutton could be released from his role in the so called "Malan trial" at the end of June 1996.
Frank Dutton's secondment is both an honour for him personally as well as a compliment to the SA Police Service. It recognises that the SA Police Service has detectives of the highest international standards.
Senior Superintendent Dutton will be able to match his skills with other top investigators from throughout the world. Whilst his skills are sorely needed in South Africa I regard his secondment as a longer-term investment for the SA Police Service. His experiences will benefit other detectives of the SA Police Service upon his return.
It is encouraging to see the South African Police Service take its rightful place amongst other police agencies at an international level.
