STATEMENT ON THE ARMED ROBBERY AT THE LEBANESE EMBASSY

STATEMENT OF THE MEC FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY ON THE ARMED ROBBERY AT THE LEBANESE EMBASSY.

The MEC for Safety and Security in Gauteng, has today met with the Lebanese Ambassador to South Africa Mr. Charbel Stephan in order to show our support and sympathy following the dastardly armed robbery on the Embassy on Sunday night.

Police interim measures are presently being undertaken to protect the Ambassador's home externally.

Security is also going to be stepped up in all embassies and consular generals offices in the whole province. The police will be patrolling the areas concerned on a 24 hour basis.

The MEC for Safety and Security in Gauteng has further taken up the matter with the National Ministry of Safety and Security as well as the Foreign Ministry with a view to find ways of beefing up and ensuring maximum security for all the Embassies.

Meanwhile the Norwood police detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. The Ministry will be monitoring the developments continuously.
