MEC STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF CAPTAIN (CAPT) B.S. MAVUSO IN SWAZILAND.

The Ministry of Safety and Security in Gauteng condemns with no uncertain terms the criminal behaviour of police officer capt. B.S. Mavuso who was arrested in Swaziland on the 10th May 1996.

Capt. Mavuso, who was serving as a Chaplain in the SAPS in SOWETO was arrested for illegal possession of R5 rifle (not AK47 as some newspaper reported), two magazines, 1833 rounds of ammunition and R12000:00 counterfeit money.

The officer is still in custody in Swaziland and is facing charges of:

- Possession of arms of war in Swaziland - Possession of ammunition without a licence and - Possession of counterfeit money.

After booking the weapon from the state together with 60 rounds of ammunition, the officer went absent from duty without leave from 09-05-1996 until 10-05-1996.

Subsequently, the police searched his house in Leondale, Germiston, and found several items including ammunition.

Contrary to Newspaper reports, the ANC has said that Capt. Mavuso is not a member of the organisation.

The SAPS is considering his immediate suspension.

The Ministry's position with regard to this, is that, such members have no place in the SAPS. A service which is committed to transparency, accountability and public service and crime prevention at all times.
