GAUTENG PROV GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS NEW CABINET

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

MEDIA STATEMENT

PREMIER SUPPORTS CABINET RESHUFFLE

The office of the Premier welcomes President Mandela's wise choice of Cabinet Ministers. The newly appointed ministers, particularly those who share similar competences in the provinces, can be assured of our support and co-operation.

We further welcome the inclusion of Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Penwell Maduna, Pallo Jordan and Valli Moosa in the cabinet.

The President's announcement is a challenge for the ANC, as the true leader of democracy in the country, to govern at full speed without any NP pseudo-baaskap obstructionism.

President Mandela's announcement sends a clear message that no political party, especially the NP which has an out-and-out discredited record on Constitutional democracy, can ever imagine it can hold the country to constitutional ransom.

According to Mr De Klerk the NP's departure was due to the fact that there was no guarantee for perpetual joint decision-making in the executive structures of government. Under no circumstances can we ever have allowed the perpetuation of an endless transition.

If perpetual transition and permanent partnership in the transitional government was the NP's conception of democracy, then it's about time they go into the opposition benches and become pupils of democracy.

We reiterate our full confidence in the leadership of President Mandela and the ANC's collective leadership.
