PRESS STATEMENT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REGARDING INCORRECT REPORTING
For some time now the media have been reporting, incorrectly, that Robert Mcbride received amnesty. A letter by Paula Mcbride which appears in the Star of 13 May 1996, perpetuates this misconception. Amnesty is a concept introduced by the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act, 1995 (Act No 34 of 1995) which only recently came into effect. Mr Mcbride's sentence of death was initially commuted to a sentence of imprisonment, whereafter he received remission of sentence in September 1992.
