DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF FINANCE TO RETIRE FROM PUBLIC SERVICE

The Minister of Finance, Mr Trevor Manuel, today announced that Dr Estian Calitz, Director-General of Finance, will retire from the Public Service on 30 June 1996. Dr Calitz retires after a public service career of 19 years, having played an active role in the design and implementation of economic and fiscal policy.

Dr Calitz, who served as Director-General from 1 October 1993, had approached the previous Minister of Finance, Mr Chris Liebenberg, with a request that his 5-year contract be shortened. This was agreed to with effect from 30 June 1996.

Although Dr Calitz will be missed by the Department, he has been instrumental in laying the groundwork in a number of important areas, including the establishment of the South African Revenue Services, medium-term fiscal planning, the management of foreign development assistance and the preparation for the restructuring of the Department of Finance. He leaves behind a management team well equipped to take these processes forward.

Dr Calitz plans to pursue his career in teaching and advising on economic matters.
