TRANSFORMATION COMMITTEE FOR EDUC CRISIS IN VRYBURG

Issued by: North West Communication Service

The North West provincial government on Monday night set up a Transformation Committee to deal with the crisis in education in Vryburg, where the province experienced unrest last week.

The unrest followed court interdicts against the Congress of South African Students and the SA Democratic Teachers Union over the Vryburg HoerskoolUs perceived attitude towards its black pupils.

A statement after Premier Popo Molefe met the Acting MEC for Education, Mr Z Tolo, senior departmental officials, the Vryburg Mass Democratic Movement structures and the Human Rights Commission agreed that the new committee would begin its work immediately.

The terms of reference will be to address the demands of the Vryburg community and ensure that government education policy is implemented and normality is restored.

The committee will also ensure that an effective non-discriminatory delivery of education takes place in the area, said the combined statement.

The team will work closely with the HRC which earlier on Monday paid its second visit to Vryburg to assess the situation first hand.

The Premier called on all parties to commit themselves to the reasonable and speedy resolution of all problems relating to education in Vryburg.

We are optimistic that the problems can be resolved amicably and speedily, Mr Molefe said.

Last week, Cosas members went on the rampage after they alleged their grievances were not fully addressed by authorities.

The latest move is seen against he backdrop of transition and transformation in the entire country.

Problems during transition and transformation are not unexpected, said the Premier.
