PRESS STATEMENT
Meeting of the Cabinet Wednesday 24 April 1996
The Cabinet held its scheduled fortnightly meeting in Tuynhuys this morning.
The Cabinet noted a report from the Minister of Sport and Recreation that the Olympic Bid Committee will be making a presen- tation to the Cabinet towards the end of May. This in keeping with a previous Cabinet decision committing government support for and co-operation in the preparation of the bid, with a presentation to be made to the Cabinet at the appropriate time so as to enable a final decision to be reached on support for an eventual bid.
The Cabinet further approved the hosting of the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes meeting in South Africa in August-September 1997, the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism being the responsible Ministry.
The Cabinet was briefed on two international conferences that are due to take place in the country, viz. Ninth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (27 April to 11 May) and the Information Society and Development Conference (13 to 15 May).
The Cabinet concurred with the Minister of Agriculture on the refusal of entry of all beef imported from the United Kingdom and the instruction to importers to dispose, at their own expense, of all beef kept in bond as well as meat en route to South Africa.
The Cabinet approved persons proposed by the Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology to serve on the councils of twenty associated cultural institutions, the list of which is below.
