ATTACK ON POLICE OFFICERS AT WATTVILLE CID OFFICES

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

It is difficult to put into words the disgust and anger aroused by this week's attack on two police officers stationed at the CID Offices in Wattville. No self-respecting citizen can defend the cowardly actions of the three assailants, who pretended to be seeking the assistance of Constable NK Kwela and Constable KN Maramba before turning their guns on them.

The Ministry of Safety and Security is issuing a challenge to the community at large to supply every scrap of information which they have on this crime. If communities expect police officers to be on hand, in accessible places, day and night, they have a corresponding duty to help protect the police service as an institution. Silence in the face of an attack such as this erodes the relationship between the police service and the community on which effective anti-crime measures depend.
