STATEMENT ON THE PROPOSED FREEDOM MONUMENT
President Nelson Mandela and a delegation from his office this morning met Danie de Jager, Abie Krok and others to discuss the proposal on a national freedom monument.
The President emphasised as he had done in the past that this initiative should be as transparent as possible and involve members of the public.
In this regard, the meeting concurred with the President's proposal that an issue of such national importance would best be handled by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture. The Committee can conduct public hearings on the need of otherwise for such a monument, any representative structures that may be set up to supervise the process, and the contribution that various artists may make.
The President's Office will communicate both with the Parliamentary Committee and the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology on how to take the matter forward.
