PRESS STATEMENT 29 MARCH 1996

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications, Mr Saki Macozoma, yesterday announced his resignation from the Committee.

Reacting to the announcement, Co-Chairpersons of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, Dr Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane and Mr Peter de Klerk, said "It is always sad to part company with a business associate of the calibre of Mr Macozoma. During his term on the Committee Mr Macozoma demonstrated keen sensitivity for the mandate of the IBA. He particularly respected the independence of the Authority. We are saddened by his departure and we wish him well in his new endeavours".

Mr Macozoma's replacement has not yet been announced. The IBA said that it looked forward to a continued pleasant and fruitful relationship with the new Chairperson as well as members of the Committee.

Responding to the announcement that Minister Pallo Jordan was to step down from the Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting portfolio, Dr Matabane said that this had come as a surprise. "Dr Jordan has been a supportive Minister," she said.

Mr de Klerk said that the Authority had benefitted greatly from its interaction with Dr Jordan. "We are certain that Dr Jordan will continue to contribute towards the development of our country and the upliftment of its people" he said.

Welcoming the appointment of Mr Jay Naidoo to the Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting portfolio, the Co-Chairpersons said that Mr Naidoo had proved himself an able leader. "We have great confidence in Minister Naidoo and wish him well in his new role".
