DUARTE ON THE MARCH ON THURSDAY

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

STATEMENT BY THE MEC FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY, MS JESSIE DUARTE, ON THE PLANNED MARCH ON THURSDAY 28 MARCH 1996

Provincial Police Commissioner Sharma Maharaj and I will be holding emergency consultations early tomorrow morning (Wednesday) with Premier Tokyo Sexwale to brief him on preparations and plans to ensure the safety of people and property during the planned march through Johannesburg on Thursday.

We will also convey to the Premier details of a submission which we have received from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Witwatersrand expressing concern at the planned march.

The Attorney-General has pointed out that there is a high risk that serious injury could occur to people and property, and has indicated particular concern at the national repercussions should this occur.

I am aware that the Premier is due to meet the leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party during the course of tomorrow.

It is possible that he will respond publicly on the outcome of our emergency consultations with him.
