PAUSE FOR THOUGHT ON HUMAN RIGHTS DAY - VALLI MOOSA

Issued by: Msomi Hunt Lascaris

Thursday 21 March

South Africans should pause for thought about the sanctity of human rights on this public holiday, Human Rights Day, says the Deputy Minister of Provincial Affairs & Constitutional Development, Vally Moosa.

He says this is the ideal day to reflect upon the importance of the new Bill of Rights now being finalised as part of the new constitution.

This is the first year that March 21 is being observed as Human Rights Day. It was formerly Sharpeville Day, in commemoration of the Sharpeville and Langa massacres.

Moosa says the new Bill of Rights should ensure that human rights in South Africa will never again be violated. He says the new Bill of Rights will protect the full range of rights, including equality before the law and freedom of speech and expression.

Issued by Msomi Hunt Lascaris on behalf of the Department of Constitutional Development & Justice.

Deputy Minister Moosa will be available for telephonic comment today, Thursday 21 March, from 8 am till 5pm: Call 082-552-5212
