JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE ON INTELLIGENCE
PRESS STATEMENT
The Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence wishes to express its concern at the incorrect reference in the media that the position of the Inspector-General of Intelligence is that of Director-General, and request the media to correct the perception created. The position in question is that of the INSPECTOR-GENERAL of all Intelligence Services, which is an important aspect of the civilian monitoring of the Intelligence Services.
On Tuesday, 20 February the Committee conducted interviews with candidates for the position. These proceedings were open, as the public and members of the media were invited by the Committee to attend.
The nomination and subsequent appointment has been under debate by various parties because a 75 per cent majority vote in Parliament is required for confirmation. The majority view of the Committee is that Adv T L Skweyiya would be the best candidate for appointment. However, because the Committee conducts its business in such a way that it requires full consensus before it confirms any decision, the proposal of Adv Skweyiya is still dependent on the formal confirmation by one party. The Committee will subsequently adopt its proposal in the form of a resolution on Monday, 18 March. This resolution will be presented to Parliament on Tuesday, after which it will be debated during a joint sitting of both Houses.
