The National Public Protector, Adv Selby Baqwa, confirms that he has received a complaint regarding the Sarafina II play. He has decided to investigate the matter. The investigation will include looking into the tender procedures followed, the render contract, the funding of the play and all related issues. In terms of the law the particulars with regard to the investigation will be kept confidential until completion of the investigation. Full particulars will be disclosed in his Report to Parliament when the investigation is finalised. It is not possible at this stage to specify the exact date when the Report will be tabled in Parliament, but it is expected that the investigation will be completed in a matter of weeks.
The Public Protector is assisted in the investigation by an auditor seconded from the Auditor-General's Office for this purpose, Mr Lourens van Vuuren, and by a chartered accountant from the private sector, Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu.
