WORLD TB DAY
March 24 is World TB Day. The theme for this year is "We are all at risk".
As the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic continues to worsen, the risk of becoming infected with TB increases. Fortunately, an effective cure exists.
The Department of Health, through its revitalized National Tuberculosis Control Programme, is currently implementing a strategy to treat and cure TB which follows the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO). This strategy involves focusing on those who are spreading the infection and ensuring cure in 9 out of 10 cases. Practical steps to ensure cure include maintaining a reliable drug supply, providing patient-friendly service and keeping a record of those on treatment.
The implementation of this new strategy depends on the commitment and participation of all people involved in TB control, including patients, community members, nurses, doctors and health officials at all levels.
All South Africans can help in the fight against TB by seeking care for a chronic cough and supporting those being treated for TB. With everyone working together, TB can be cured.
