Prof I Lambrechts of the Department of Business Management, University of Stellenbosch, has been appointed as a one-man evaluation committee to consider the submissions received on a summary document regarding the restructuring of the liquid fuels industry.

According to Dr Gert Venter, Director-General of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs (DMEA), the document outlines the respective positions of Business, Labour and Government regarding the restructuring of the liquid fuels industry. The document was compiled by the DMEA and released by NEDLAC for public comment.

Prof Lambrecht's appointment, announced today by Dr Venter, was done in consultation with the Business and Labour constituencies of NEDLAC. Prof Lambrecht has been involved in various studies in the liquid fuels industry, as well as in investigations regarding the restructuring of the cement, baking, quarry and electricity industries.

The brief of the evaluation committee is as follows:

- issues and areas of general consensus and agreement; - issues and areas of disagreement and the extent thereof; and - comment on areas of disagreement and possible means of resolution thereof.

The report will be presented to NEDLAC for formal reaction by Business, Government and Labour in order to reach consensus on ways and means to resolve areas of difference and to assist Government with regard to preferred options and their implementation.

Meetings will be scheduled by Prof Lambrechts with the various stakeholder groups. The stakeholder groups will be free to nominate individuals to interact with Prof Lambrechts and will be given ample opportunity to explain their views.

It is expected that Prof Lambrechts will present his report towards the end of May 1996.
