PRESIDENT'S PROGRAMME

Issued by: Office of the President

MEDIA STATEMENT PRESIDENT'S PROGRAMME

President Nelson Mandela returns from his three-day visit to West Africa this evening, Monday 4 March, 1996. A press conference will be held at the airport on his arrival.

As he indicated at a press conference on Friday 1 March, the President will this week undergo thorough medical examinations at a clinic in Johannesburg. This comprehensive check-up, agreed to between the President and his doctors, will entail routine medical tests, which will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The President will continue with such part of his original schedule as can be accommodated in the overall programme. Details regarding such meetings, as well as the rest of his previous schedule - for these three days - will be announced in due course.

When the results of these examinations are ready, the President's doctors will issue a public report at a press conference. In the meanwhile, such interim reports as are available, will be communicated to the public.

Both the President and the doctors are confident that this routine check-up will confirm that the President is in good health; and lay to rest speculation on this matter.
