CALENDER OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS MARCH/ APRIL 1996

FEBRUARY 24- SOUTH AFRICA: The Duke of Edinburgh to MARCH 2: chair the annual conference of the Britis Commonwealth Ex-services League in Cape Town.

FEBRUARY 27- GHANA: UN Economic Commission for MARCH 1: Africa (UNECA): Investment Promotion Conference on reviving private investment in Africa in Accra.

FEBRUARY 29- AUSTRALIA: International Writers Week MARCH 8: 1996 in Adelaide.

MARCH 1-2: THAILAND: Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM). (informal but historic summit between heads of government of the EU states plus the President of the European Commission; and the heads of government of the ASEAN states plus those of Japan, China and South Korea in Bangkok). The purpose of ASEM is to forge a new partnership between Asia and Europe. Political matters (eg human rights) and economic matters (eg trade) will probably head the agenda and the efforts of the participants to find common ground.

MARCH 6-8: SOUTH AFRICA: State visit by President of Namibia, Mr Sam Nujoma.

MARCH 8: WORLDWIDE: International Women's Day.

MARCH 13: SOUTH AFRICA: Introduction of Budget (Appropriation Bill) by the Minister of Finance, National Assembly in Cape Town.

MARCH 15-20: SOUTH AFRICA: Mr Kenneth Clarke, British Chancellor of the Exchequer accompanied by a delegation of international financiers and advisers to visit SA on invitation of Minister Chris Liebenberg during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in 1995.

MARCH 18: UNITED KINGDOM: Lecture on water rights in SA to be presented by a senior official of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

MARCH 18-22: ETHIOPIA: OAU Panafrican Conference on Youth and Development in Addis Ababa.

MARCH 21: SOUTH AFRICA: HUMAN RIGHTS DAY (Public Holiday)

MARCH 26-28: SOUTH AFRICA: Debate on Appropriation Bill, National Assembly in Cape Town.

MARCH 30- SOUTH AFRICA: Rand Easter Show'06 at the APRIL 14: National Exhibition Centre, NASREC.

MARCH 31- SOUTH AFRICA: All Africa Conference on APRIL 4: Animal Agriculture in Pretoria.

APRIL 1-2: SOUTH AFRICA: The Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic (ZPCSA) member states will be hosted by Minister A Nzo in Somerset West.

APRIL 5: SOUTH AFRICA: GOOD FRIDAY (Public Holiday).

APRIL 8: SOUTH AFRICA: Family Day (Public Holiday).

APRIL 16-18: FRANCE: Marseilles will be hosting its 3rd (biennial) International World Water Market (HYDTROTOP'96). The exhibition/conference is not only an industrial and commercial crossroads unique of its kind, but also a shop-window, where exhibiting companies will have the opportunity to display their latest technology on all that is related to the water and waste-water industry.

APRIL 18-20: SOUTH AFRICA: Joint EU/SA Conference on "TELEMATICS FOR HEALTH" in Cape Town. The aim is to explore ways in which modern telematic and information technologies can be applied to halth matters.

APRIL 22-24: THE NETHERLANDS: Second International Conference on Local Authorities confronting Disasters and Emergencies to take place in Amsterdam.

APRIL 24- ARGENTINA: SA PROMOTIONAL EVENT to be MAY 4: held in Buenos Aires. SAA & SATOUR in conjunction with the Sheraton Group Hotel to held a cultural week on SA in the form of a food festival and a photo exhibition.

APRIL 25-28: SOUTH AFRICA: National Sports Exhibition at the National Exhibition Centre, NASREC.

APRIL 26- SOUTH AFRICA: Ninth Ministerial Meeting MAY 11: of the United Nations Conference on Trde and Development (UNCTAD IX) at Gallaghar Estate. Three thousand delegates, press and NGO members from 188 countries, are expected to attend the conference.

APRIL 27: SOUTH AFRICA: FREEDOM DAY (Public Holiday).
