PRESS RELEASE BY NORTH WEST GOVERNMENT DIRECTOR GENERAL MR JOB MOKGORO ON RETRENCHMENTS IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
Reports on President, Mr Nelson Mandela's speech at Potchefstroom University have created the impression that massive retrenchment of civil servants is to take place in the North West Province.
Indeed, North West Government does share some of the attributes of the Eastern Cape and Northern Provinces, which have had to incorporate the bureaucracies of former "independent" bantustans and provinces.
However, The North West Government is busy finalising the programme for rationalisation of its public service. The number of retrenchments, if there would be any, has as yet not been determined. However, initial indications are that the scale of duplication and excess is much less than in the other Provinces. Furthermore, any prposals n rationalisation will always, as has been the practice, be negotiated with union representatives in the North West Provincial Bargaining Chamber.
The North West Government also wishes to reiterate our concern and sensitivity about any possible job losses in the public service. We will do our best to keep any retrenchments to a minimum.
