BOOST FOR SA-IRAN TRADE LINKS
Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Trevor Manual will meet the Iranian Minister of Commerce, Mr Y. Ale-Issaq, on Friday 23 February at the official opening of the first solo exhibition of the Islamic Republic of Iran in South Africa.
The show, at the National Exhibition Centre (Nasrec) in Johannesburg, aims to promote trade and investment between Iran and South Africa. Since diplomatic relations were restored three years ago, trade volumes have remained low.
Minister Ale-Issaq has attributed this to Iran's historic trading patterns - concentrated on Europe and Asia - and an inadequate knowledge of the South African market. "This exhibition is our first major step in developing political and economic relations with South Africa," he said.
Organised by the Export Promotion Centre of Iran, the exhibition involves about 135 Iranian companies, exhibiting products ranging from vehicles and automotive parts to iron, steel and aluminium products, to carpets, textiles, clothing, leather goods and handicrafts. Amongst the exhibitors, about 35 companies will be selling goods directly to the public.
Centrepiece of the exhibition will be the 900m2 traditional pavilion - portraying a fascinating panorama of Iranian history, culture and resources.
The first solo exhibition of the Islamic Republic of Iran runs at the National Exhibition Centre to Sunday, 3rd March.
