MBEKI TO DELIVER OPENING ADDRESS AT WORKSHOP

PRESS STATEMENT

On Monday the 19th February 1996, at 10h15 the Executive Deputy President, Mr T. Mbeki will deliver the Opening Address of the Workshop on Rural Poverty Alleviation.

The workshop is sponsored by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in conjunction with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The workshop will be held at the Civic Centre in Cape Town.

It will be attended by representatives from the SADC countries, farmers from SADC, Non Governmental Organisations and representatives of the sponsoring institutions - SADC secretariat, IFAD and the World Bank / EDI. The objectives of the workshop can be summed up as follows:

• Provide an opportunity for SADC countries to make an Independent assessment of the experience with externally-financed projects and programmes aimed at rural poverty alleviation.
• assess the impact of economic policies, macro-economic as well as sectoral, on rural poverty levels.
• seek a broad consensus among governments, donors and NGO's on the principal issues of poverty eradication, including the most effective methodologies and policy approaches.
