ACTING PREMIER APPEALS FOR AID TO ALEX FLOOD VICTIMS
Acting Premier Mary Metcalfe has appealed to the public to come to the assistance of victims of the floods in Gauteng.
A collection depot has been set up at the Sandton Fire Department for support to the Alexandra residents whose homes were swept away or damaged. Tempory accommodation has been set up in 8th Street in Alexandra, and the police are helping to move families into tents erected by the national defence force today (Thursday).
"The Alex people need blankets, food and whatever else you can afford," Ms Metcalfe said late today. "They are in a miserable situation, and I appeal to people to help ease their plight."
Ms Metcalfe returned tgo Gauteng late today after attending meetings in Cape Town. She is receiving regular briefings on the flood situation from local government officials and provincial MECs Sicelo Shiceka (Development Planning and) Jessie Duarte (Safety & Security), and keeping a close watch on all areas which may be affected by the rains.
Ms Metcalfe also plans to visit the temporary shelter in 8th Street, Alex, at approximately 20h00 tonight. Further details will be released as they become available.
