PRESS RELEASE ON THE DEATH OF MINERS AT VAAL REEFS AND RANDFONTEIN ESTATE GOLD MINE.
The Premier of the Province ofNoth West, Mr Popo Simo Molefe has learnt with regret the death and injury of miners at Vaal Reefs gold mine and the miner who died at the Randfontein Estate gold mine.
It is unfortunate that workers who are committed to ensuring that South Africa plays a competitive role in the world market often meet up with death in such an untimely manner. Their loss is often felt most by their families, friends and colleagues.
The Premier would like to convey a message of condolence to their next of kin and their colleagues. We believe that they have made their contribution in an attempt to build the economy of our country and unfortunately they had to pay the cost of improved economy with their lives.
These continuous incidents of death and injury at work place serve as an indictment to those who are committed to developing the country's economy to ensure that safety at workplace is as important as the objectives of developing the economy. This calls for a relook into the safety measures that are in place in the mining industry.
