METROPOLITAN POLICING GETS GREEN LIGHT FROM GAUTENG CABINET

A "Concept Document" outlining the process of establishing metropolitan and municipal police services has been approved by the Gauteng Cabinet.

The document, drawn up by the province's Ministry of Safety & Security, outlines a broad framework for the establishment of local police services by metropolitan councils and municipalities in Gauteng.

These local police services - which will be managed and funded by local authorities - will play a vital role in ensuring visible policing in high-crime areas such as taxi ranks and the central business districts of the province's major cities and towns.

Last week, provincial MEC Jessie Duarte presented the "Concept Document" to the national Ministry of Safety & Security. It was approved at a meeting of Cabinet in Johannesburg today, and will now be discussed at a consultative conference to be held this weekend (February 17). This conference will allow Community Police Forums and local authorities to discuss the province's approach.

The conference, which is open to the media, will be held from 09h00 at the Braamfontein Recreation Centre in Johannesburg.
