PAHAD COMMITTEE ON SWAZILAND

Issued by: Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs, National

Assembly

PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS, NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, AFTER MEETING ON SWAZILAND ON 7 FEBRUARY 1996.

The Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Aziz Pahad, the Director General, Mr LH Evans, the High commissioner to Swaziland, Mr W Louw and other officials of the Department.

The Deputy Minister provided the meeting with an input on the latest developments in Swaziland, followed by questions and discussion.

The Committee expressed its concern at the state of affairs in Swaziland and hopes that there will be a speedy move towards democracy, which it is convinced is the only basis on which the problems confronting the country can be addressed.

The Committee was pleased to hear that the department and the High Commission were in touch with a wide range of actors in Swaziland, and that South Africa had indicated its willingness to play a facilitative role, bilaterally and multilaterally, if requested, in the development of the democratic process in Swaziland.

The Committee expressed its wish to receive ongoing communications on the development of this process.
