North West Premier Popo Molefe and his MEC for Education Mamokoena Gaoretelewe today (Monday) held an hour-long meeting with a Commission for Human Rights delegation headed by veteran politician Mrs Helen Suzman.
The purpose of the meeting was for the commission members to introduce themselves to Mr Molefe and his government.
Mrs Suzman pointed out that the commission had the responsi- bility to cultivate respect for human rights in the province.
She pointed out that they would shortly open an office in Mmabatho to monitor progress towards engendering a culture of human rights.
Welcoming the delegation, Mr Molefe said he was a firm believer in human rights, adding that he had spent his political life advocating respect for human rights. He would continue to do so. His provincial government was, therefore, fully committed to upholding democracy and human rights.
Mrs Suzman was accompanied by fellow commissioner Mrs Pansy Ptlakula, who is a full-time commissioner.
The delegation focuses on the Gauteng and North West provinces.
