GAUTENG GOVERNMENT DONATES MONEY TO DROUGHT RELIEF 'TRAIN OF TRIBUTE'
Gauteng's Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts & Culture has donated R40 000 to the organisers of the "Train of Tribute" project, who are organising a concert in Maritzburg to raise money for victims of the recent floods in KwaZulu/Natal.
The funds will be used to cover some of the organisational costs of the concert.
The concert, to be held at the Jan Smuts Stadium in Maritzburg on 10 February, will feature some of South Africa's top musicians, including the Soul Brothers and Mzwakhe Mbuli. Details of this were announced at a media conference held in Premier Tokyo Sexwale's office this morning.
The musicians will leave Johannesburg on 9 February in a train which will also carry emergency supplies from Gauteng to assist flood victims.
Gauteng's Department of Welfare & Population Development is coordinating the collection of these emergency supplies, and the provincial Minister of Welfare, Mr Sakkie Blanche, has appealed to local authorities, businesses, the industrial and agricultural sectors, churches and welfare organisations to support this project. Donations in the form of non-perishable food, clothing and blankets are needed in particular.
Donations can be delivered to any service office of the Gauteng Department of Welfare before 9 January.
