Issued by: African National Congress Gauteng Province
The African National Congress in the Gauteng Province wishes to express our anger and outrage at this morning's massacre of people outside a factory at Alrode, on the East Rand.
Fourteen people were killed when seven to ten men armed with AK-47's, R-5 rifles and handguns opened fire on a crowd of 2000 people that were queuing for jobs outside the NF Dye-casting factory in Alrode. Twenty-six more people were serously injured.
We condemn in the strongest terms this dastardly act. The perpetrators of this vile act must not go unpunished. We call upon members of the public to give the police all the necessary assistance to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Whatever motivation for the attack, the ANC will not allow a situation where violence and anarchy becomes the order of the day in Gauteng Province. We will not allow our province to be plunged into a state of civil war. Ordinary people cannot be held ransom by armed gangs who attack innocent people. The ANC will use all the resources at its disposal to ensure the culprits are brought to book.
We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish those injured a speedy recovery.
