The National Minister of Health, Dr N C Dlamini Zuma, senior officials of the Department of Health and representatives of the National Medical and Dental Council of South Africa (NMDCSA) leave for Cuba on 28 January 1996, to finalise the recruitment of Cuban doctors to South Africa.
This visit follows the signing of Government to Government Agreement between the two countries in November 1995 in the area of medical cooperation.
The provision of accessible, affordable, equitable and efficient health services is being hampered by a shortage in many parts of South Africa, and especially in the rural areas, of skilled medical doctors. Cuba is willing to assist South Africa in its endeavours to recruit skilled medical doctors.
The main objective of this visit will be to screen and examine selected skilled medical doctors in Cuba if they meet the requirements set in respect of qualification, skills and language. Dr Zuma is expected to return to South Africa on 7 February 1996.
