APPOINTMENT OF ZUBEIDA BARMANIA
OFFICE OF THE MINISTER FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE AND ADMINISTRATION
The Ministry of Public Service and Administration has the pleasure to announce the appointment of Advocate Zubeida Barmania, to the Minister's Office. Dr Skweyiya wishes to make it known that we consider this appointment most opportune and we are certain that, given Ms Barmania's track record, she will be a most valuable asset to our office and the civil service as a whole.
Advocate Barmania was among the first black women to be admitted to The Bar in this country. She studied with the Province of the North-West in assisting to contain the major crisis surrounding the SEBO Pension Funds. In spite of her new position she will maintain her position as Chair of the SEBO Pension Fund, having so been appointed as a result of the confidence that the members have in her. She will also maintain contact with the province which she served with distinction for two years.
Prior to returning to South Africa and the University of the Western Cape, where she worked with our current Director-General, Dr Paseka Ncholo, she lived in Canada.
Ms Barmania was Senior Counsel to Ontario Hydro, the equivalent of Eskom, where for twenty years she provided legal services to this Canadian utility with respect to one of the largest pension plans in that country. She won an award for her leadership and promotion of employment equity in the work place.
She is on record saying that her task is "to ensure that the rights of all workers especially the minority groups are protected where employment opportunities and benefits are concerned".
